Supply Chain Management For Cost Savings

In the business world, the bottom line is how much profit you make. In a very basic sense, you must have more money coming in than you have going out. In other words, your profits must exceed your expenditures by a certain percentage in order for your business to be profitable.

One of the ways businesses can be profitable is through supply chain management. Supply chain management is considered a process that involves the components of planning, putting into action, monitoring and controlling the supply chain. For supply chain management to be effective, whomever is in charge of it must manage the supply chain quite efficiently.

The fundamentals of supply chain management include the management of raw materials, development of raw materials into a finished product and then the movement of the finished products to a endpoint where they can be sold to the consumer.

There are three types of activities that occur in the supply chain: strategic activities, tactical activities and operational activities.

When considering strategic activities, the facilities that house and distribute the supplies are of great consideration. The size, number and location of these type of facilities are all of great consideration. Other considerations involve what new products to make, and at what location and how to integrate these products into the supply chain in the most efficient way possible.

Tactical considerations include decisions about production and inventory, different facets of transportation, and marketing data which compares the specific business against its competitors.

Operational activities include, but are not limited to, production and distribution, scheduling, forecasting, planning, inbound and outbound operations and orders.

Many companies employ people who have a certification or degree in supply chain management. These people are trained in the issues that are specific to supply chain management, and would be an asset to any organization or company who is in need of supply chain management.

In business, you always want to reap the profits and minimize the expenses. Supply chain management is a good way to do this. Find someone who is trained and preferably with a good track record in the facets of supply chain management.
